Connect Cursor
Add Budget Smugglers to Cursor's mcp.json, then sign in through the browser or use an API token.
Cursor reads MCP servers from an mcp.json file. Use ~/.cursor/mcp.json in your home folder so Budget Smugglers is there in every project. A project’s .cursor/mcp.json works too, but keep tokens out of it.
Add the server#
Sign in (OAuth)
Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"budget-smugglers": {
"url": "https://my.budgetsmugglers.app/api/mcp"
}
}
}When Cursor connects, it sends you to Budget Smugglers to sign in. Choose whether Cursor may make changes, and choose Allow.
API token
Make a token under Settings › Connections in Budget Smugglers. Put it in an environment variable called BUDGET_SMUGGLERS_TOKEN, then add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"budget-smugglers": {
"url": "https://my.budgetsmugglers.app/api/mcp",
"headers": {
"Authorization": "Bearer ${env:BUDGET_SMUGGLERS_TOKEN}"
}
}
}
}Set the variable in your shell profile or system settings, then restart Cursor.
If you already have other servers, add budget-smugglers inside the existing mcpServers block.
Check it’s working#
Open Customize in the sidebar and make sure budget-smugglers is switched on. Then ask in chat:
Which accounts do I have in Budget Smugglers?
If it doesn’t connect, open the Output panel (Ctrl+Shift+U, or Cmd+Shift+U on a Mac) and pick MCP Logs.
Remove access#
Delete the entry from mcp.json. To cut off access from our side, disconnect Cursor or revoke the token under Settings › Connections. See API tokens and connected apps.
