Importing and Sync

Bulk sync

Bulk sync opens each bank's login page in its own tab. Log in to each, say go, and it imports from each one.

With a few banks, syncing them one at a time is a chore. Bulk sync opens every bank’s login page in its own tab. You log in to each, and the Sync extension imports from each one once you say go.

You need the extension installed and connected, and your banks added as sites. It works best once you’ve recorded your export for each.

Starting a bulk sync#

  1. In Budget Smugglers, open Import. The Bulk sync card lists your sites, each with when it last synced.
  2. Untick any you want to leave out, then click Start bulk sync.
  3. Each site opens at its login page in its own tab. The tabs are grouped as “Bulk sync”.
  4. Log in to each tab, in any order. Your password manager fills them in as usual.
  5. Once you’re in, the tab asks Ready to import? Click Import to run your recorded export, or Skip to leave that site out this time.
  6. Click Next bank to go to the next tab still waiting on you.

You can also start one from the extension: click it and choose Start bulk sync.

A bulk sync covers one pool. From the Import page, it’s the pool you’re viewing, and only the sites set up for that pool are listed. From the extension, it’s the pool picked in the popup.

Watching it go#

While it runs, the card on the Import page shows each site as it goes:

  • Waiting for login
  • Ready
  • Importing
  • How many transactions came in, or Up to date
  • Skipped, or Didn’t work

Go to tab jumps to a site still waiting on you. Instead of a notification per site, you get one at the end, like “3 banks, 42 new transactions”.

Click Finish to stop waiting on sites you haven’t got to. When it’s all done, click Done to clear the card.

Sites without recorded steps#

A site with nothing recorded just says to export as usual. Whatever you download comes straight in. Click Done in the tab when you’ve finished with it.

Click Record steps there instead to record your export for next time.

Login pages#

Bulk sync needs to know each site’s login page. The extension picks it up when you visit a page on the site with a password box (without a one-off token in its address). Until it knows one, a bulk sync opens the site’s home page.

If the site logs you in somewhere else, or it picked the wrong page:

  • On the right page, click the extension, open More and click Use this as the login page.
  • Or in the extension’s settings, open the site and set Login page.

Several logins at one site#

If a site has more than one login, the card lists each one so you can leave some out. Bulk sync does them one after the other in the same tab: “Log in as Sam”, then Ready to import?, then the export. Between logins it logs out for you, if you’ve recorded how. Otherwise it asks you to.
