Importing and Sync

Recording your export steps

Export a statement once while the Sync extension watches. After that, Sync now does the same clicks and imports the file for you.

The Sync extension learns your bank’s export by watching you do it once. From then on, Sync now repeats those clicks and the statement comes straight into Budget Smugglers.

You’ll need the extension installed and connected, with your bank added as a site.

Recording your export#

  1. Log in to your bank as usual.
  2. Click the extension in the toolbar. Next to Auto-export, click Record steps.
  3. Export your transactions the way you normally would: open the transactions page, pick the date range and format, and click the bank’s export button. The file is imported as soon as it downloads.
  4. Click Finish on the bar at the bottom of the page, or Finish recording in the extension.

Cancel stops without changing your saved steps.

While you record, a small bar at the bottom of the page counts your clicks. Clicks go straight through it to the page. It fades while your mouse is over it, and you can drag it by its grip. It remembers where you put it.

Afterwards the extension shows Auto-export: Ready and how many steps it saved.

Sync now#

Next time, log in to your bank, click the extension and click Sync now.

  • A panel on the bank’s page lists the steps and ticks them off as it goes.
  • An outline and pointer show what it’s about to click.
  • It ends by saying how many transactions were added, or that you’re up to date.

The extension’s popup shows how the last sync went, like “12 new” or “Up to date”, and when.

The “started debugging” bar#

Menus that only appear when you hover work too. The extension remembers the menu items your mouse went through on the way to each click. When it replays, it moves the real mouse along the same path, then clicks.

To move the real mouse it uses the browser’s debugger. So while Sync now runs, the browser shows a bar saying “Budget Smugglers Sync started debugging this browser”. It attaches only to the bank’s tab, only during the export, and lets go as soon as it’s done.

What’s recorded#

Only clicks: which buttons, links, menu items, checkboxes and dropdown options you pick. Never anything you type into a text box. Nothing at all inside a form with a password box, so the login form is ignored entirely.

The steps are kept in your browser, not sent to Budget Smugglers.

Recording again#

If your bank changes its website, a step may not be found. You’ll get a notification saying the automatic export stopped. Export by hand that time (it’s still imported), then record again: click the extension and, next to Auto-export, click Replace.

Finishing a new recording replaces the old steps. Cancel keeps them.

To delete the steps, open the extension’s settings, find the site and click Forget next to its export steps.

Recording a log out#

If a site has more than one login, Bulk sync needs to log out between them. Show it how once:

  1. While logged in, click the extension, open More and click Record log out.
  2. Log out the way you normally would.
  3. Click Finish.

Without recorded log out clicks, Bulk sync asks you to log out, and carries on once the login page is back. See several logins at one site.
