Importing and Sync
Sync troubleshooting
Fixes for common Sync extension problems, like a step it can't find, a statement that didn't come through, or accounts it doesn't recognise.
When the Sync extension needs you, it says so in a browser notification. Most link straight to the fix.
“Automatic export stopped”#
A step in your recorded export couldn’t be found. Usually the bank has changed its website. The notification names the step it got stuck on.
- Export by hand this time. It’s still imported.
- Record the steps again: click the extension and, next to Auto-export, click Replace. See Recording your export.
“No statement came through”#
The steps ran, but nothing downloaded. Export by hand this time, then record the steps again.
“Couldn’t read” a file#
The extension saw the download but couldn’t read it. Sometimes the bank sends a web page instead of the file, or the bank’s tab was closed before it could fetch it. Upload the file on the Import page instead.
“Which accounts are these?”#
The export names accounts Budget Smugglers doesn’t know yet. Click the notification (or Match in the popup). Choose an account for each one, or New account, then click Import. It’s remembered for next time.
To skip this for new files, set Name in bank exports on each account under Accounts in Budget Smugglers.
“Check this import”#
The file is waiting on the Import page under Needs attention. Columns it doesn’t recognise, accounts you haven’t picked, or rows it can’t read will do this. Click the notification, or open Import and click Finish next to the file.
“Couldn’t import”#
The upload to Budget Smugglers failed. The notification says why. If it’s a connection problem, open the extension’s settings and check it still shows Connected.
“Budget Smugglers isn’t set up”#
The extension isn’t connected. Open its settings and click Connect. See Connecting it to your account.
Connect doesn’t work#
- “That token can’t import into any pool.” Your role in each pool can’t import statements. You need an editor role or above; ask the pool’s owner.
- “Not connected. Click Connect to try again.” The approval window was closed, or Allow wasn’t clicked. Try again.
- “The extension needs permission to reach your Budget Smugglers.” You said no to the browser’s permission prompt. Click Connect again and allow it.
If it still won’t connect, make a token yourself and paste it under Paste a token instead.
The import token stopped working#
The token lasts a year, and it stops if someone revokes it under Settings › Connections › API tokens. Open the extension’s settings, click the pencil next to Connected, then Connect to get a new one.
The Import page says it’s connected to a different account#
The extension in this browser was connected while you were signed in as someone else. Open its settings, click the pencil next to Connected, then Connect while signed in to this account.
Bulk sync opens the wrong page#
Bulk sync opens each site’s login page. If it opens the home page, or a page that isn’t the login:
- go to the real login page, click the extension, open More and click Use this as the login page, or
- set Login page for the site in the extension’s settings.
Bulk sync says nothing is set up for this pool#
A bulk sync only lists sites set up for the pool you’re viewing. On your bank’s page, pick that pool in the extension’s popup and click Use here. See Several pools.
A “started debugging this browser” bar#
That’s expected during Sync now. The extension uses the browser’s debugger to move the real mouse, so menus that open on hover work. It’s only attached to the bank’s tab while the export runs.
The extension doesn’t show up on my bank#
It only runs on sites you’ve added. Open the bank’s login page, click the extension and click Add site, then allow the site when the browser asks.
