Accounts

Add your bank accounts, cards, loans and super, group them by business, and choose who in the pool can see each one.

Every transaction lives in an account. Open Accounts in the sidebar to see them all as cards, each with its balance, how many transactions it holds and the date of the latest one.

Adding an account#

You often don’t need to. Import a statement and Budget Smugglers offers to create the accounts it finds. See your first import.

To add one by hand, choose Add account and fill in:

Field What it’s for
Name What you call it, like “Bills” or “Visa”.
Type Everyday, Savings, Offset, Credit card, Loan, Mortgage, Investment, Term deposit, Super / retirement, Cash, Asset (home, car) or Other.
Bank The bank or institution.
Currency Set once. It can’t be changed after the account is saved.
Opening balance The balance before the first transaction you import.
Belongs to Personal, or one of the pool’s businesses. Only shown once the pool has a business.
Shown at your bank as The account’s name or nickname on your bank’s website. The Sync extension uses it to find the right account.
Name in bank exports Rows in an import labelled with this name go into this account automatically.
Account number Payments that mention this number are matched to this account, which helps pair up transfers.
Opened and Closed Optional dates.
Notes Anything you want to remember.

The balance is the opening balance plus every transaction in the account.

Account types#

The type decides where an account shows up and what else you can track on it. The card offers a link to set up the extra tracking:

  • Loan and Mortgage: Set up loan tracking. See loans and offsets.
  • Savings and Term deposit: Track interest. See savings.
  • Super / retirement: Set up super tracking. See super.
  • Investment: Track its shares. See shares.
  • Asset (home, car): Set up its value. See assets.

Once it’s set up, a chip on the card links straight to the loan, savings, fund, portfolio or asset.

Super, assets and share portfolios still count in your net worth, but they stay out of spending, income, budgets and categorising.

Finding an account#

Use Search accounts or tap a type chip to filter the list. The Needs import chip shows accounts that haven’t had a new transaction or import for a while: two weeks for everyday, savings, offset and credit card accounts, 45 days for loans and mortgages.

Each card has View transactions. Everyday, savings, offset, credit card and cash accounts with transactions also get Weekly ups and downs, which opens the forecast for that account.

Businesses#

If the pool has businesses, accounts are grouped under Personal and each business. Choose Add business to make one, then edit an account and pick the business under Belongs to. Business accounts stay out of personal reports, budgets and forecasts. See businesses.

Whose account it is#

Once the pool has people, the account menu (the ⋯ on the card) has Whose account. Pick who holds it, with optional dates if it changed hands. Its transactions are then theirs, unless a rule or a split you set says otherwise.

Who can see an account#

Each role decides which accounts its members see by default. To change that for one account, open the card’s menu and choose Who can see this. For each member, pick:

  • Role default: whatever their role allows.
  • Full access: they can see it and change it, even if their role wouldn’t show it.
  • Read-only: they can see it but not change it.
  • Hidden: they don’t see it at all.

You need permission to manage members to do this. Pools explains the roles.

Closing, archiving and deleting#

Edit the account and choose Archive to tuck it away. Giving it a Closed date archives it too. Archived accounts move to Closed & archived at the bottom of the page. Choose Unarchive to bring one back.

Delete only works on an account with no transactions.
