Everyday money

The map and places

See where your money went on a map. Places are worked out from what your bank sends, and you can set or fix them yourself.

The Map page shows where your money went, with a circle for each town or suburb. Bigger circles mean more money. It’s in the sidebar under Money.

How places are worked out#

Budget Smugglers works out where each transaction happened from what your bank sent:

  • a town column, where the bank provides one
  • a suburb in brackets, like “ALDI (Mudgeeraba)”
  • the place card terminals add to the end of the description, like “ALDI STORES MUDGEERABA QLD AUS”

It matches these against a built-in list of places from GeoNames. Nothing about your transactions is sent anywhere to do it.

Wrong guesses are worse than none, so anything unclear is left without a location. Online payments are skipped too, since the town on the end is the company’s, not where you were. Transfers between your accounts never get a location.

Using the map#

Pick what to show from the filters above the map:

  • Period: this month, last month, last 3 months, this or last financial year, last 12 months, or a custom range. It starts on the last 12 months.
  • Scope: personal, business or everything, if your pool has businesses.
  • Spending or Income: where money went, or where it came from.

Zoomed out, nearby places group into one circle with a count. Click a group to zoom in. Click a single place to see its total and number of transactions, then See them to open those transactions.

Beside the map:

  • Top places lists the eight places with the most money, and the total across all of them.
  • Countries shows a total per country, once you’ve spent in more than one.
  • A link at the bottom counts the transactions with no location. Click it to see them.

Refunds count against the place they came from.

Setting a location yourself#

Open a transaction and use the Where field. Type a town or suburb, then pick it from the list. You can also choose:

  • Nowhere in particular, to leave it off the map for good.
  • Work it out, to hand a transaction you’ve set by hand back to automation.

Under the field, a note says where the current location came from: your bank, the description, or a rule.

To set many at once, tick them on the Transactions page and use Set location… in the bar that appears. The No location only filter shows everything that still needs one.

With a rule#

A rule can set the place too. Fill in Where it happened (optional) when you edit the rule. This suits a merchant whose statements never mention a town, like your local café that bills under a head-office name.

Turning locations off#

Locations are a personal setting. Switch off Show locations in Settings › Profile and the map, the Where field and every other location bit disappear for you. Other members of your pool keep theirs.
