Everyday money
People and splitting
Add the people in your pool, say whose accounts are whose, and split income and spending between them.
People are who’s in your pool, with or without a login: you, a partner, the kids. Once they’re in, you can say whose pay is whose, split a shared bill, and see each person’s share in reports.
People aren’t the same as members. A member can sign in. A person is just a name the money can belong to. You can link the two.
Adding people#
- Open Settings › People.
- Choose Add person.
- Fill in the name. The rest is optional.
- Choose Add.
The other fields:
- Login: link the person to a member of the pool, if they have one.
- Date of birth: lets charts show their age. Turn off Show age in reports to keep it off charts. See milestones.
- Notes: anything you like.
Each person’s row has a Transactions link, which lists everything that’s theirs.
Archiving and deleting#
From the ⋯ menu, Archive hides someone from pickers but keeps their history. Restore brings them back.
Delete only works for someone nothing hangs off. If they have transactions or super set up, archive them instead. Rules that mention them just drop their lines.
Whose is a transaction#
A transaction’s people come from one of three places, in this order:
- A split you set on the transaction itself.
- A rule that says whose it is.
- The account’s holder on the day it happened.
Anything nobody is given counts as Shared.
Whose account#
On the Accounts page, use Whose account from an account’s menu to say who holds it. Its transactions are theirs unless a rule or a split says otherwise.
You can set periods, for when an account changes hands. Leave a date blank to keep it open. Hand it on ends the current holder’s time yesterday and starts the next person’s today. This suits a card lent to a teenager for a week, or an account passed down.
Splitting one transaction#
Open a transaction and use the Whose field:
- Click a name to make it all theirs.
- Split evenly shares it equally between everyone.
- Shared gives it to nobody in particular.
For anything else, Add a line and pick a person with either an Amount or a % of rest. Fixed amounts come off the top first, then percentages split what’s left. One person can have both, like “first $1,000, then half”. Whatever’s left over shows as shared.
Under the field, a note says if a rule or the account’s holder set it. If you’ve set it by hand, Let rules decide hands it back.
To set many at once, tick them on the Transactions page and use Set whose….
With a rule#
Rules have a Whose (optional) field that works the same way. This is the easiest way to sort out pay: a rule for each payslip, giving it to the right person.
Seeing each person’s share#
- Transactions: filter by person, or by what’s shared.
- Reports: pick Everyone, one person, or Shared. With one person picked, every figure is just their share. The Income by person card shows who brought the money in, whoever is picked.
- CSV export: the transactions export has a People column with each person’s share.
