Backups

Budget Smugglers backs up every night, encrypts each backup before it leaves the server, and keeps them off-site for up to a year.

How often#

The whole database is backed up every night, Australian time.

How long they’re kept#

  • Daily backups for the last 14 days.
  • Monthly backups for the last 12 months.

Older backups are deleted automatically.

Where#

Backups are stored off the server, in Cloudflare R2 storage in the Asia-Pacific region. If the server were lost, we’d restore the latest one onto a new server.

How they’re protected#

Each backup is encrypted on the server before it’s uploaded. The server holds only the public half of the key, so it can make backups but can’t open them. The private half is kept offline and is only used for a restore. See encryption.

Backups are checked every night, and we’re emailed if one fails.

Getting something back#

Backups cover the whole service, not single accounts, so we can’t roll back just your data. If you’ve deleted something by mistake, email us and we’ll see what we can do.

For your own copy, use Download my data whenever you like.

After you delete your account#

Deleting your account removes it from the live database straight away. Copies in backups age out on the schedule above, so they’re all gone within 12 months. Backups are never used for anything except restoring the service.
